Mark Bixby & Wee Man: 4th Day San Jose/Long Beach (Redondo Beach)

We lost Mark Bixby (44) in a tragic accident Wednesday March 16, 2011;  an airplane crash, with 6 on board, killed 5;  Mike Jensen was the lone survivor and is currently in the UCI Burn Center – his condition continues to improve.  Mark & Mike were both on the trip from San Jose to Long Beach.  Please note: the accident was not related to the San Jose/Long Beach trip.  Please click here to see Long Beach Press Telegram for details.

Mark will be forever remembered for his many virtues including his efforts and hard work to promote safe bicycling; not least for his ceaseless campaigning to include a bicycle and pedestrian path on the proposed Gerald Desmond bridge that will replace the existing structure that connects Long Beach to the Long Beach Harbor.

The tribe is embarking on a 4 day ride from San Jose to Long Beach;  28 bikes locked and loaded. The event was originally scheduled to depart three weeks ago and postponed due to a storm .  At that time 40 people were committed to the ride but the delay and the disappointment of the postponement shrank the roster of veterans.

The support vehicle, loaded with everyone’s bikes, is heading up to rendezvous with the riders, arriving via Southwest Airlines, in San Jose this afternoon to start the 2011 Tortuga 500: 500 miles in 4 days.  Pain, Suffering and High Comedy will provide hilarious entertainment each and every mile . . .
